Calaid Christmas Gift List buys warmth and comfort for thousands of refugees
With over 250,000 refugees and vulnerable people having arrived in Europe from across the Mediterranean in 2016 and over 50,000 displaced people living in horrendous conditions in temporary camps in Greece alone, the problem can often leave us feeling overwhelmed+. However, this Christmas it is possible to make a direct positive contribution to someone’s life as CalAid, the movement for refugees, has created an Amazon wish list. It enables supporters to buy specific highly needed items and have them sent directly to the camps. Items range in price from only £1.21 for a foil survival blanket, to £50 for a men’s warm waterproof jacket. Educational tools and books for children in camp schools can also be purchased in languages such as Farsi, English and Greek.
Becky Chapple, a CalAid worker who spends most of her year working in the camps says: “Every day I meet very vulnerable, desperate people who literally have nothing and are reliant on the kindness of others. Winter is a bitter time of never-ending cold and fatigue for the thousands of men, women, children and babies. Our Amazon Wish List means you can play a direct part in someone’s life and offer them respite and comfort. When you buy a sleeping bag for example, you know it’s immediately on its way to help someone just like you get through those long winter nights.”
CalAid is a non-political movement of ordinary people who act on the belief that all human life is precious and all people should be allowed to live with dignity.
